Let me get this straight, I’ve only been going to Philippine theatre (as in really going) this past year. I don’t claim to have a passion for musicals, have any acting talent, have had theatre workshops, nor can I sing the OCR of whatever uso broadway musical there is right now… or ever. In other words, this is coming for a baby theatre-goer..ehem.. a gorgeous but baby theatre-goer—just to get it straight. haha! ;)

So having said that, I liked…nay..LOVED the performance I saw last night!

Rivalry:Ateneo-Lasalle the Musical was a continuous surprise from start to finish. I can’t really say much about the what the musical is about as it’s pretty apparent. Duh. Read the Title.

What I’m going to say though is that the play was set in 1968, the Lasallians were called Lasallites, Miriam was Maryknoll, there was NCAA instead of UAAP, aaaaand basketball players were(are) still hot commodities that girls fawn over.

As the blog title suggests, I’m from UP and I was “aware” of this “rivalry” during my time in college (of which I had the biggest crush on BJ Manalo..ehem)  but I’ve never really understood it. Never really wanted to, to tell  you the truth. And after watching the musical, I’m still not sure if I understand the rivalry.. really, but I appreciate it for what it is. How weird does that sound, right?  But it makes sense..at least in my brain. Haha!

Basta, after watching the production I thought to myself— Ateneo and Lasalle are lucky to have each other. :) Not sure if that was the message of the musical, but that’s what I got! :)

yay for the cast! :)

What else is there to say? The actors were all amazing! The leads all seemed new (or maybe this is because baby nga ako at di ko sila kilala..ewan). Oh but..that the dude playing Quito was also the actor who played Equus and I kept on getting snippets of Equus in my brain (it  was very distracting), but not to say that he wasn’t effective in his role here. His smitten approach to love and his “the moves” would have melted this UP heart. And if you’ll watch, you’ll know why. :D   The lead actress, which I remember hearing was named Athena was very likeable, good pipes too! :)   The actors playing Tommy and Paco were very impressive. Slow clap moment when they were singing while doing elevated feet push-ups. IKR?!?  Try it during regular push-ups lang, ANG HIRAP KAYA!!!

Great performances also from the supporting cast!  The parents were so 1968 but still so current. A very special mention goes to Mr. Noel Trinidad, because he was just EPIC! And I say this not only because he’s THE Noel Trinidad but because his part of the play was golden. :) And that song was my favorite too for obvious reasons! Kudos to Mr. Joel Trinidad for writing it! :)

lyricist, director, composer

I  also can’t imagine liking this show without the wonderful chorus. I love the Maryknoll girls and their song that goes… “please??” at the end. :) I wanted to sing it just with a different school in there. haha!   There was never a dull moment with the choreography and direction (ang galeng mo Mr. Del Mundo!)—from the epic blocking, lighting and movement of the song — What’s the story?–to the ROTC scene, to the locker scenes, or to the pre-basketball AND basketball scenes. All I could say was WOW!

I believe Mr. Ed Gatchalian said it best when he mentioned that the idea was to give people something that they would want to watch.

This baby theatre-goer likes this idea. This was one of my most enjoyable nights in Philippine theatre. More of these please! :)

SO GO WATCH IT!

PS. Although…if there’s one thing I would have loved to have seen… it would have been shorter shorts for the basketball players.  ;) And sana may programme since I really don’t know who is which.. etc. Sorry I couldn’t put names!   :)

WATCH IT.

The show will run in the Meralco Theater from January 27 to 29, February 5-8, 8-12 and 15-19, 2012.  Show starts at 8pm on Wednesdays to Saturdays and additional 3pm matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are available with Ticketworld (www.ticketworld.com.ph) or call 891-9999, or just go to Meralco theater and watch!

Tango Fire in Manila! :)

Unknown to many, this bunny is part Latina–actually, Mexican, but yeah.. you get the drift.

And I’ve always thought I could dance. Ballroom during highschool wasn’t really hard for me. And let me tell you that the recent dancing bouts I’ve did courtesy of my mom’s socio-civic club were relatively easy and fun.

So both my latina blood and dancing skills were glad that Kassy invited me to attend the launch of Tango Fire in NUVO in Greenbelt a few weeks ago.

Ballet Philippines brings the world-renowned The Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires to perform “TANGO-FIRE— the Flames of Desire“  for 2 days (January 17-18, 2012) at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila. The show starts at 8pm and will feature world-class latin dancing, passionate singing and music.

I thought–hey I’ll give Tango a try.

So I bombed. I tried doing Tango and I massively failed. It’s hard!I’m blaming my partner because I really think with the right partner–i can so totally do what the people in the picture are doing. haha! :)   Feel the music, move, anticipate what your partner is going to do. And the hardest part of it all was being led. Hmm.. which poses another question about me that we will not answer at this time.

After that experience, I have a new found respect for anyone who can dance Tango and look  beautiful doing it. It’s the kind of dance that you wish you could do. It’s the kind of dance I wish I could do.

Those who can’t tango…should watch! :)

If you love dancing, or want to see really beautiful dancing, I suggest you buy tickets.

Tickets start at P1,200. For tickets, contact Ticketworld at 891-9999 or Ballet
Philippines at 551-1003.

My gahd!!! I did not blog for a whole month!!! Winter = October in my life, so that sorta explains that.. Or not.. or that really massive wall of a writer’s block that totally choked all creativity from my spazzy brain.. could be! Hmm… come to think of it, it may have been lack of lov…este surf. Haha!! :)

After a month of not surfing, I went to Baler for the Aloha Boardsports and Travel Factor Surf and Music Festival—- 3days and 2 nights of surfing, surfing competitions, concerts, and fun-fun-fun! Did it deliver?? Hell Yehz!

This will not be a blog post about how epic a time I had with my friends. Or the fact that I saw Gabby Alipe’s dimples. Or me joining a surfing competition. Or my friend Ting winning said competition. Or Peter getting approached by girls to have their picture taken with him. Or how big the waves in Baler were. Or how happy it felt dancing my heart out with my friends. Or about how awesome the event was..**

Nope.

This is a blog post inspired by people that my friends and I have seen in the beach. Just some nice suggestions. =)

5 THINGS PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE DOING IN THE BEACH

1.Wear Make-up

For all that is holy—it’s a beach!! Unless you’re posing for a magazine, ditch the foundation and the eyeshadow! Or if you do have to wear make-up, make it look natural at least? But no. Really. Wearing make-up to the beach just feels effing fake. And isa pa, it’s going to run when you get wet or sweaty, both inevitable. Eww.

2. Wear dangling gold earrings (that look like tassels) and other golden abubot

This is specially true when you’re about to go take a surfing lesson in really really really really knarly waves like one girl we saw. Well, when we saw her after her lesson, she had no more earrings and no more gold necklace.  The common sense rule is don’t wear stuff in the beach or the surf that you’re not willing to give to the ocean.

3. Super Public Displays of Affection, and other “stuff”

Okay, the occasional kissy-smack thing and the holding hands thing and the hugging’s okay but torridly making out? Unless it’s preceded by a dramatic scene involving long lost love and or a mala-telenovela fight scene that will make the whole beach cheer or go awwwww.. don’t do it! Also, this includes the couple that some of my friends stumbled upon in front of a resort doing some other “stuff”. Get a room, or staaay really awaaay from the party. Or unless you’re doing really life-changing/never seen before stuff— go ahead–make my day! :)

4. Not Dress Appropriately

Meaning, don’t look like you’re going to a party in Republiq. This includes sequins, rhinestones and such. I really don’t understand swimsuits and bikini’s with rhinestones. I really don’t. Are they to make sure your cleavage sparkles and catches the light? Waitap…Hmm.. wait effective ba?  Maybe I should get some! wahahaha! ;)

5. Litter

Littering is never cool. Leaving trash on the beach is just plain stupid and irresponsible. And people who smoke should never just throw their cigarette butts in the sand and leave em there. Have pity on the creatures in the ocean—including surfers!

Actually, come to think of it, who am I to say what people should or should not do?
Do what you want! Disregard everything I said except the NUMBER 5!
Walang basagan ng trip!

Just be comfortable in your own skin.It doesn’t matter if you’re fat, sexy, thin, tall, short, balding or God’s gift to men and women— just be happy.

Oh di ba? biglang walang naging point ang blog post! haha!

hey! at least I blogged! :)
and I really <3 ed last weekend. I needed this!
